Quick answer

Emergency AC repair in Miami means a technician at your door the same day, usually within a few hours, with the parts that fail most often already on the van. Vice City Cooling answers at every hour across Miami-Dade, diagnoses with the panel open, and gives you a written price before any work starts.

An air conditioner rarely picks a convenient moment to fail. In Miami the worst hours are late afternoon in July and August, when the attic is past 130 degrees, the condenser has been running since breakfast and every weak part in the system is under the most strain it will see all year. That is when capacitors pop, contactors weld shut, float switches trip on a clogged drain and compressors lock up on a high head pressure.

We keep emergency slots open every afternoon and evening through the peak season so a no-cool call does not roll to tomorrow. Dispatch runs from our office on SW 13th Terrace in Flagami, a few minutes from the Palmetto and the Dolphin Expressway, so Coral Gables, Little Havana, Kendall, Doral and the urban core are all short runs. A van is normally less than 25 minutes away.

For a household with an infant, an older relative, someone on medical equipment or pets left at home, a house that climbs past 90 degrees is a safety problem, not a comfort problem. Tell the dispatcher and the call moves to the front of the queue.

Warning signs

When a call counts as an emergency

No cold air at all

The fan runs but the vents blow room temperature or warm air, and the house is climbing a degree every half hour.

Outdoor unit silent

The thermostat calls for cooling, the air handler runs, and the condenser outside never starts. Often a capacitor or contactor.

Humming, buzzing or clicking

A compressor trying to start against a failed capacitor hums and trips. Leaving it cycling can burn the windings.

Water on the floor

A full drain pan or tripped float switch in the air handler closet, or water already reaching the baseboards.

Burning or electrical smell

Shut the system off at the thermostat and the breaker. A burnt smell usually means a motor or wiring failure.

Breaker keeps tripping

A breaker that trips again after a reset is protecting you from a short. Do not keep resetting it.

Ice on the lines

Frost on the copper suction line or the indoor coil means low charge or no airflow. Switch to fan only and call.

Process

What happens after you call

  1. 1

    Dispatcher answers

A person picks up at any hour, takes your ZIP and the symptom, and asks the questions that tell the technician which parts to grab.

  2. 2

    Window confirmed

You get a two-hour arrival window and a text when the van is on the way, with the technician's name.

  3. 3

    Diagnosis at the panel

Voltage, capacitor microfarads, amp draw, refrigerant pressures, airflow and the drain line are all checked, and you see the readings.

  4. 4

    Price before work

You approve a written repair price. If the system is old enough that replacement makes sense, you get that number too, without pressure.

  5. 5

    Fix and test

The repair is done from the van, the system runs to a proper temperature split, the drain is cleared and you get the invoice by email.

Pricing

What an emergency AC repair costs in Miami

$165 to $385Capacitor or contactor

The most common no-cool fix. Dual run capacitors and contactors ride on every van.

$135 to $295Drain line clear and float reset

Flush, vacuum and treat the line, test the float switch, dry the pan.

$445 to $985Condenser or blower motor

Depends on horsepower, variable speed versus PSC, and access in the closet or attic.

$385 to $1,350Refrigerant leak find and recharge

Electronic and bubble testing, repair of accessible leaks, pound-by-pound charge.

$1,780 to $3,450Compressor replacement

Only after a full diagnosis. On older units we show the replacement cost beside it.

These are typical Miami-Dade ranges for 2026, not a quote. The final price depends on the part, the equipment brand and where the air handler sits. The diagnostic fee is credited back when you approve the repair, and evening and weekend calls are billed at the same rate as weekdays.

Local context

Why emergencies spike in Miami-Dade

A Miami system runs close to 3,000 hours a year, roughly twice what the same equipment works in the Carolinas. Parts wear on hours, not on the calendar, so a five-year-old capacitor in Kendall has seen what a ten-year-old one sees up north. Summer dew points in the mid 70s also keep the evaporator coil soaking wet from May to October, which is why clogged condensate drains are the single most common emergency we run in June, July and August.

Storms add their own pattern. Afternoon lightning and FPL power flickers are hard on compressors and control boards, and after a named storm the calls shift to units that were flooded at ground level, knocked off their pads or restarted too quickly after the power came back. If your condenser sat in standing water, leave it off and have it checked before running it.

Building type changes the job. Older CBS homes in Flagami, Westchester and Coral Way usually have the air handler in a hall closet or the attic. Condos in Brickell, Downtown and Miami Beach need a building engineer or association sign-off for access, and we coordinate that on the phone before the technician arrives so the visit is not wasted at the front desk.

Why Miami homeowners call Vice City Cooling

Central Flagami base

Parts on board

Capacitors, contactors, motors, float switches, drain parts and common refrigerants are stocked on every van.

Same rate nights and weekends

No after-hours surcharge on emergency calls. The price you approve is the price you pay.

Straight answers on old units

If a repair does not make financial sense on a 17-year-old system, we say so and show both numbers.

Homeowner tips

Before you call

Check the breaker and thermostat

Make sure the thermostat is on Cool, set below room temperature, and that neither the air handler nor condenser breaker has tripped.

Look at the filter

A filter packed solid can freeze the coil. Swap it if you have one, then run fan only for an hour to thaw.

Find the float switch

If there is water in the closet pan, the float switch has shut the system down to protect the ceiling. Do not bypass it.

FAQ

Emergency AC repair questions

How quickly can you get to my house?

Most emergency calls across Miami-Dade get a same-day visit, and during peak season we hold afternoon and evening slots specifically for no-cool calls. The dispatcher gives you a two-hour window when you call.

Do you charge more at night or on weekends?

No. Emergency calls at night, on weekends and on holidays are billed at the same rate as a weekday visit.

Should I keep running the AC if it is making a loud noise?

No. Turn it off at the thermostat. A compressor humming against a failed capacitor, or a motor grinding on bad bearings, can turn a small repair into a large one if it keeps cycling.

Can you fix it on the first visit?

Usually. The parts behind most Miami emergencies ride on every van. Compressors, coils and some brand-specific control boards may need to be ordered, and we will tell you the timing before you approve.

What if the system should be replaced instead?

You get the repair price and a replacement estimate side by side. If you need cooling tonight and a replacement next week, we can often make a temporary repair so the house is livable in the meantime.
